Name of Ram Dass was given by his guru Neem Karoli Baba when he had spent days in aashram. The real name of Ram Dass was Richard Alpert.

Richard was working as a professor in Harvard university, and experimenting on LSD(Lysergic acid diethylamide), when he experimented LSD on a Junior student, cause of this, he got fired from university. After kick off from university, Richard started experimenting with one of his friend Timothy Leary.

With a long break, Richard went for India, and became a disciple of Neem Karoli Baba on Baba’s ashram. He extolled everyday of Maharajji and he had started getting induced in various ways by Godman from his first meeting.
