Situated at an altitude of 3,048 metres above sea level, the Kartik Swami Temple is one of Uttarakhand’s most prominent shrines, dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (also known as Skanda or Murugan). Located on the legendary Kronch Parvat mentioned in the Skanda Purana, the temple is held in the highest reverence by devotees of Lord Skanda. It offers a serene yet spiritually charged atmosphere, nestled amidst dense forests of rhododendrons, oak, and deodar. The temple is famous for its vast clear panoramic views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks like Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Kedarnath.
According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Kartikeya is the elder son of Shivji and Maa Parvati, born to slay the mighty Tarakasura. Following his victory after slaying Tarakasura, one day Lord Shiva tasked both of his sons with circumambulating the universe seven times. While Lord Kartikeya set out to fly around the infinite universe, Lord Ganesha completed the task by simply encircling Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. Enraged by what he saw as trickery —and his parents’ silent support of it—Lord Kartikeya left Kailash and went to Kronch Parvat for his penance as a vairagi (ascetic). After his penance there, Lord Kartik Swami eventually left the place and went permanently to the present day Tamil Nadu region, where he is worshipped as Murugan swami.

According to the Skanda Purana, Kartik Swami is the elder son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He was born for slaying the Mighty Tarakasura who was disrupting the cosmic balance by doing great evil. Shortly after Lord Kartik Swami was born, he slew the evil Tarakasura and rescued the Devtas from him.One day when Lord Shiva took a test for both of his sons, Lord Ganesh and Lord Kartikeya. The test was to do seven circumambulations of the whole cosmos, while Lord Kartikeya completed the test by going around the universe seven times, Lord Ganesh simply circumambulated his mother-father, Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati. Lord Kartik Swami took this act of Lord Ganesh as clear cheating and went furious, when he asked Shiv ji and Maa Parvati they sided with Lord Ganesh. Which made him even more furious. As a result, the extremely disciplined and the dharmic 'general of gods' Lord Kartik Swami left Kailash and went south in present day Tamil Nadu, where Lord Kartikeya is famously called Murugan Swami.
