About Mathura

Mathura has got a blend of ancient traditions, religious fervour, and historical significance that make the city a gem of its own. It is one of the oldest cities in India cited in ancient texts and scriptures, a hub for culture, religion and trade. The most pivotal event that Mathura is associated with is the birth of Lord Krishna. Mathura is a part of the Brij region, the lands where Shri Krishna spent much of His life. Mathura also holds significance in the religion of Buddhism with many Buddhist monasteries and stupas.

A major pilgrimage site in the city is the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple which is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. It is majestic during the festival of Janmashtami which commemorates the birth of the deity. Another important pilgrim site is the Vishram Ghat where He supposedly rested after defeating Kansa. To have a look at intricate architecture and jubilant festival celebrations, you can pay a visit to Dwarkadhish Temple. The Government Museum, Mathura or the Mathura Museum houses a marvellous collection of sculptures and artwork from the Kushan and Gupta periods.

The ideal time to go to Mathura would be from October to March. This is the peak tourist season. The other times of the year are less preferred due to unappealing weather conditions. The city is lively and an amazing sight during the peak season but also it is very crowded. Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated in the month of august or september with great zeal making the place invigorated with spirituality. Holi, celebrated in the month of March, is also a delight to be a part of. The celebration of Holi in Mathura and nearby Vrindavan is jovial and exuberant.
