Nestled in the dense jungles of Kukuchhina and Dronachal Valley and perched at an altitude of 2200 meters. The Mahavatar Babaji’s cave is located in Dwarahat and is a mere 22 km from it. Famous for the divinity and serenity it provides, this cave holds significant value for the yogis initiated into Kriya Yoga. This Kriya yoga meditation technique was rediscovered by the great yogi Lahiri Mahasaya, who himself was initiated by the great Mahavatar yogi, who is believed to be residing here in the cave, though invisible to humans. Babaji’s disciples have described the fact that Babaji bears an extraordinarily exact resemblance to his disciple Lahiri Mahasaya.
Lahiri Mahasaya was a government-employed supervisor who was posted at Dwarahat in 1861. Mahasaya, who had been in Benaras for most of his life, was eager to experience spirituality in this region, given Guru Dronacharya used to meditate here; thus, this region is often referred to as Dronachal Valley in epics like Mahabharata. One day when Lahiri Ji was guided by his destiny to this cave, he met the Babaji, who called his name, “Shyam Charan, you’ve come,” and placed his hands on Lahiri’s head, making him insightful of his past life. Lahiri Ji realized that the baba was none other than his own past-life guru. Later, Baba initiated Lahiri in Kriya Yoga at the famous Vaishnavi Shakti Peeth, also known as Dunagiri Temple, which is a revered shrine in the region.
Baba is said to be residing here in an invisible state and is believed to appear only to those who are fit enough for Kriya yoga. Baba’s presence renders an indescribable calm in the environment. Any devotee who utters with reverence the name of Mahavatar Babaji here attracts an instant spiritual blessing and the testimonial to this fact are the seekers of Baba themselves.
The cave remains open for visits throughout the year. The best time to visit is anytime except monsoon season (late June–August); the weather is pleasant in the summers and chilly-snowy in the winters. As the call of the Holy Himalayas is the call of the divine, an opportunity to come here should never be missed.
