About Char Dham Yatra

Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is a highly regarded spiritual journey through the holy shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri. All the Char Dhams have steep mountains around them. Yamunotri dham is the origin of Yamuna River, and Gangotri Dham is the origin of Ganga river. Both the Rivers are few of the holiest rivers in India, and these two dhams are known to bestow prosperity and grace of the river dieties Mother Yamuna, and Mother Ganga. Shri Kedarnath Dham, is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and surrounded by snow capped himalayan peaks at all sides. Shri Badrinath Dham, is a highly revered temple of Lord Vishnu, preserver of the universe. It's believed that Lord Vishnu resides in Badrinath in the form of Shri Badrinarayan.

The Char Dham circuit usually opens around April-May and is open till November for pilgrimage. The best time to visit Char Dham is from May to June, or from September to October. The weather is pleasent during these times, and the roads are safe to travel as well.

How to do Char Dham Yatra from Delhi ?

The Char Dham temples are connected either by Road or by Hiking. Badrinath and Kedarnath temples are also accessible by Helicopter services.

You can get regular bus, taxi, train and flight services till Haridwar/Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. The closest railway station to the Char Dhams is Haridwar Junction, from there you can find regular taxi and bus services to individual temples. The closest airport is Dehradun Airport (DED), from there you can get taxi services to haridwar, and then bus/taxi services to the Char Dham.

Out of the 4 temples in Char Dham Yatra, Shri Badrinath dham and Gangotri dham are accessible by Road directly. To reach Yamunotri dham you have to reach Barkot by Road, and from there you can either hike or hire a paalki service for the 6-7 kilometers of trek. To reach Kedarnath dham you have to reach Sonprayag by Road, and from there you can either hike or hire a paalki service for the 16 kilometers of trek.

Budget Stays - There are dharamshalas or basic guesthouses that will cost you around ₹300 - ₹800 per night in yamnotri , gangotri , Kedarnath and Badrinath . They are simple with only basic amenities and mostly for pilgrims .

Mid range Stays - There are mid range options like GMVN or private lodges near the temples . They can cost upto ₹1,200 - ₹2,500 and are perfect for families.

Luxury Stays - You can only find luxury stay options in the base points such as Joshimath or Uttarkashi . They are usually ₹4,000 + with all the premium amenities and Serene mountain views .

The Yatra opens in late April or early May and runs till October. May and June are the busiest months and it's best to book well in advance (2-4 weeks early) , this is the time when the prices for both accomodation and transport hikes up the most too due to high demand , Helicopters and camp stays fill up fast .July - August brings monsoon risks , it's not advisable to visit this time . September - October is quieter and ideal for people who wants a more peaceful experiences and more stable prices .
