About Gwalior

Gwalior is a city in the central state of Madhya Pradesh and has a great significance for its blend of history, rich culture and marvellous modernity. Gwalior is famous for the Gwalior Fort which happens to be a great piece of architecture, atop a hill. This fort has a packed heritage with great influences from the various rulers it housed over a period of about a thousand years.

Gwalior is also known for its profound influence on arts and music. It was the home to legendary musician Tansen. In his memory, the Tansen Music Festival is held annually in the city. The Gwalior Gharana is one of the oldest schools of Hindustani classical music and it was a brainchild of virtuosos from this city. The city also has close ties with the royalty of the Scindias. Their residence in the city, Jai Vilas Palace is partly converted into a museum and it also displays great architecture.

The best time to visit Gwalior is from October to March when the weather is pleasant, neither too hot nor too cold. The city, being in a subtropical region, experiences hot summers, mild winters and a monsoon season. To avoid the harsh summer summers it is best to visit during the winter months.
